Since I came to live with Mom and Dad, they’ve been feeding me a combination of home cooked dinners, and premium kibble for breakfast. I love any kind of food, I really don’t care what I eat, it’s all good to me.
But Mom and Dad are now saying I’m going to eat nothing but home cooked and raw foods from now on. Mom read this book, The Whole Pet Diet, that has all kinds of cool recipes in it, and the dirt about what’s really in dog food. My cousins also eat nothing but home cooked food based on the recipes in this book, and they love it.
So here’s a photo of some turkey stew that Mom made for me. She cooks big batches about once a week, just for me!
And here’s a picture of me eating it. Dad laughed his head off when Mom put it down, he thought I wouldn’t want to eat anything that looked that disgusting.
But here I am, licking the bowl clean. I’m pretty spoiled aren’t I?
This is good stuff. I know it is, because I have the softest, shiniest fur now, and no more itchy skin or bad breath.
Look out ladies, here I come!
Mmmmm, nothin’ like home cookin’! Your mama must really love you, turkey breath!

So what’s in that delicious looking turkey stew your mommy made you? My mom makes me a chicken stew with carrots and brown rice, but I think I want her to add some more yummy stuff to it.

What a lucky dog! We have been doing a mix of home cookin’ and grain free high protein dog food… I believe that a good diet makes such a big difference!

Hey we’re all lucky dawgs here aren’t we?!
Here’s what’s in the Chicken Stew:
Makes 20 cups
2.5 pounds whole chicken or turkey (bones, organs, skin and all)
1/4 cup chopped fresh garlic
1 cup green peas
1 cup coarsely chopped carrots
1/2 cup coarsely chopped sweet potato
1/2 cup coarsely chopped zucchini
1/2 cup coarsely chopped yellow squash
1/2 cup coarsely chopped green beans
1/2 cup coarsely chopped celery
Some Kale
1 tbsp kelp powder*
1 tbp dried rosemary
8 oz whole barley, 6 oz rolled oats (can also use Millet or Brown Rice and oats)
Combine all w/water to cover. Bring to boil, turn down to low and simmer for 2 hours till carrots are soft. Remove from heat, debone chicken, and with hand mixer or blender, blend into puree.
Serving size:
Amounts vary depending on age, activity level, health, weight, etc. Guidelines are as follows;
Dog’s Weight
11 – 20#s = 2 to 3 cups per day
21 – 40 #s = 4 cups per day
For each additional 20 pounds, add 2 cups. But let intuition guide you, ask your dog! I eat approximately 7.5 cups if that’s the only thing I get, but if Mom adds raw meat to my diet that day, I get a little less.
The book is great because it has other recipes, and talks about how to add live enzyme foods like liver and even alfalfa sprouts to your dog’s diet for even better nutrition.
Yummy!! I’m gonna beg mom to cook this recipe for me. Tomorrow is pup-food-cooking day. No fish this time, but here’s what she’s makin me tomorrow:
Riley’s ruffage:
3lbs chicken wings with skins boiled &deboned
5 small sweet potatoes boiled & peeled
Then, in about 4 cups of the chicken broth cook:
2 lbs hamburger meat
about 3 cups brown rice (1/2 of a medium bag)
several tbsps olive oil
a generous sprinkling of garlic powder
fresh veggies available:
broccoli
carrots
califlower
sweet peas
yellow squash
zucchini
green beans
add water to cover rice
then dump 2 containers of chicken livers on top so they don’t stick
cook about 45 minutes at a moderate simmer until the rice is done.
Stir in potatoes and deboned chicken (throw away the bones)
stir in a bag of uncooked spinach
I eat about 4-6 cups a day, plus other treats like yogurt, cottage cheesers, eggs, or sometimes whatever mom and pop are eating. This lasts about 10 days. Moon seperates into small containers and freezes most of it so it doesn’t go bad before I can devour it!
We sure are lucky pups!!!
Riley tell your Mom that recipe is pawesome! Did she make it up? Thank you, I’m going to tell my Mom to write it down and make it for me next time. Yuuuuummmmm!
Wyatt,
Mom did make that up. She said she fed Kayle and Lady home-cooked foods too, so she’s been experimenting for a long time. She said Kayle had lots of intestinal woes on kibble.
Mom really spoiled me this morning. Pop cooked steaks last night, and made me TWO! I had one last night and ate the second one this morning with a big bowl of oatmeal. YUMMMMMY!
Does your mom make you take vitamins too? Mom gives me two fish oils a day, one calcium pill, half of a Centrum Sr. Multivitamin (she said she read that some of the dog vitamins have high levels of lead in ’em), and an acidophilus capsule. I don’t really like them, but most of the time I never know they are hidden in my food!
My mom makes homemade chicken, rice & barley soup and then mixes it with the grain free kibble we eat. It’s called Taste of the Wild and we get the wild poultry. There is pheasant, turkey & quail in it. NOM! NOM!
Hey Riley, wow, steak and oatmeal for breakfast? You are soooo lucky!
As far as the vitamins go, no, I’m not taking any specific ones, but Mom does put Solid Gold in my food to ensure I’m getting the minerals and stuff. Centrum huh? I’ve heard acidophilus is good, do you have gut problems?
Chuy, that sounds yummy! Mom saw that Taste of the Wild food, she might have to try that stuff if there are times when we can’t do the home cooking while we are on the road. Pheasant? Turkey? Quail? Seriously good!!!!
Only the occasional yucky belly if I drink too much creek water! When that happens, mom gives me 2 or 3 acidophilus capsules a day with yogurt. So far, I haven’t had any yucky belly problems that hasn’t cured!
Yep, Centrum senior for men (no iron). Pop laughed and laughed and said I was old. So I aggravated him even more today!
Mom hasn’t given me turkey yet. She said we might have one soon. I can’t wait to have turkey breath too!
What exactly is premium kibble? I am trying to feed my dogs better and I need a definition of premium kibble. I have bought some joint bones at Walmart for their teeth and gums. Seems to be working but, the smaller dogs have some difficulty wrapping
their mouth around it.
